Why You Should Workout Outdoors

There are many options when it comes to exercising but, although exercise classes and gym sessions are increasingly popular, there is growing evidence to suggest that exercising outdoors is even better for our health. After all, exercising outdoors may improve energy levels and decrease stress to a greater extent than working out inside.

While there’s no question that there’s a time and place for the treadmill and the elliptical, there’s nothing quite like surrounding yourself with greenery and breathing in fresh air. It clears your head, improves your happiness, and helps you drop stress like nothing else.

Here are some science-backed benefits of outdoor workout:

  • Outdoor exercise provides an opportunity to be physically active in a constantly changing environment. The more challenging the terrain, the harder the body has to work to sustain an efficient work rate. Cardio machines in the gym can provide numerous benefits, but doing the same movement pattern over and over again could potentially cause an overuse injury. Walking, hiking or running on terrain that is constantly changing teaches the body how to adapt to a changing environment. In addition, a constantly changing surface can enhance the strength of your connective tissue, which may help you avoid certain injuries.
  • Wind resistance can help you burn more calories. When running or cycling outdoors, you may have to deal with the wind, which can offer natural resistance. A strong headwind can help you burn more calories, as you have to work harder to overcome the resistance. A good tailwind can help you move a little faster, which activates the larger type II muscle fibers responsible for strength and definition.
  • You breathe better air outside. There is no doubt that fresh air outside is superior to the recycled air you breathe inside of a building. Fresh air will even give you more energy. Just 20 minutes of working out outside is equivalent to drinking one cup of coffee in terms of its energy-boosting effects.
  • Going for some exercise in the sun is an excellent way to get some Vitamin D. Every time the sun is shining and hitting exposed skin on your body, it’s triggering your body to produce more Vitamin D.
  • Working out indoors can lead to boredom and fatigue. Just think of running on a treadmill staring at the same point on the wall for miles at a time. By contrast, when you decide to exercise outdoors, you are seeing new people, new scenery and generally enjoying your time more.
